2012 Pre Season Basketball Rankings

THE Travelers

It has been reported to THE Frat Games organizers and staff to have plenty “pain meds, Icy Hot, and bandages” available for the “seasoned” Masonic Team (THE Travelers).  Player representative and member of the MWPHGL - St. John Lodge No. 5, Anthony League states, “Hey, unless something changes, we are keeping it simple…Hard defense, resting on offense.  Don’t be surprise if you see an old school set of Four Corners on offense.”  League also added the following, “ ...right now our biggest concern is getting brothers to stop fighting about who will get to set on the bench the longest.”

UPDATE: THE TRAVELERS will not compete this year.  Rumor has it, "The old grey men ain't what they used to be."

Preseason Rank: N/A

ALPHAS

The 2012 season will feature two Alpha squads.  The 2011 Frat Games regular season champions (Team Alpha) and the Gorillas.  Both teams are comprised on members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

TEAM ALPHA

The 2011 Champs are managed by Player Coach Eric “EJ” Johnson.  EJ could not be reached for comments.  It believed he is still fuming over the early exit from the 2011 Frat Games National Invitational Tournament.  The strained of watching YET another True Blue Sigma championship may be to much to discuss.  It is unclear who will return and compete for Team Alpha.  The early season start is said to be a plus to potentially get the Champions to retake the competitive floor.

Preseason Rank: 3

The GORILLAS

At the 2011 Frat Games NIT, the Gorillas represented Alpha after the regular season  Champs (Team Alpha) decline the invitation due to prior commitment by key players.  In the long awaiting rematch of the 2009 EBL Championship (were the Gorillas were victorious), the Gorillas were defeated by the True Blue Sigmas in the tournament opening round.  It has been unclear if the Gorillas would return for the 2012 season but sources close to the league have confirmed their return to competition.

Preseason Rank: 5

TEAM KAPPA

Shimmy Me This…How does a team make it to every championship over the last two years accept one, not win, and still compete at the highest level?  Hell, we don’t know either but if history is consistent, we fully expect the Kappas to be in the playoff hunt and right back in the position to compete for a title.  Sources confirm a change in the coaching staff for the Kappa team and 2 to 3 fresh legs may be joining their ranks after the suspected retiring of two dominate players.

Preseason Rank: 2

OMEGAS

THE Desert Ques have fallen in the ranks on the sudden retirement of Ernie Burries.  In 2010, the Desert Ques captured the  first and only Championship in the Inland Empire.  The 2011 team was predicted to play in the Los Angeles championship but was upset in the opening round by the LA Kappas.  One of the major advantages of this team is its solid coaching, high flying dunk specialist, and one of the better point guards in the league.

Preseason Rank: 4

SIGMAS

The 2012 season will feature the 2010 & 2011 Frat Games National Invitational Tournament champion True Blue Sigmas both teams are comprised on members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

True Blue Sigmas won the Los Angeles Championship in 2010, earned a trip to Las Vegas the same year and defeated Team Kappa in the National Invitational Tournament,  In 2011, the Sigmas traveled to the Bay Area and was crowned "Ultimate Greek Weekend" champions by again defeating LA's own Team Kappa.  Team Sigma suffered its only defeat in two years during the 2011 Los Angeles games at the hand of Team Alpha.  The True Blue squad returned to its winning ways by repeating as Back 2 Back NIT Champions at the expense of the Kappas.

Preseason Rank: 1

Kappas vs Iotas

Game 1

Lets face it folks we were not expecting this one to be much of a game. The tournament Savy Kappas versus the entire Western Region of the Iotas. The iotas team featured every able body Iota in California and 2 shipped in from Arizona. There is good news and bad news for the Iotas in this game. Good news they jumped out to an early 12 - 3 lead in the games 1st 3 minutes and looked poised to rise for the occassion. They came out and shocked the crowd and the Kappas themselves with great energy and hustle. For a moment everyone in the gym though well just maybe the Iota can do it The bad news is that they scored only 10 more pointes the remaining 37 minutes of the game. The you can do it montage turned from serious to have more of a rob schneider feel(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nwv61Uu1fdA&feature=related) see link for visualizaition. Coach Pawlos of the Kappas called an early timeout to stop the bleeding and scrolled in classic nupe fashion his team over to the bench. They took a few pictures and that was all she wrote. They went on a 30 -0 run and let the air out of the Iotas parade. The kappas switched to the run and shoot offense with All star recievers Monroe Alexander, Marquis Diamond and Anthony Sinclair repeatedly on the receiving in of long outlet passes for dunks(not Monroe he realized the rim was 10 feet tall and not 9.5 in his back yard) and layups. Marquis Diamond led all scorers in dunks(3) and points(16). The iotas had 2 players with 5 points (Cullors, Brinson) The Kappas run and shoot offense was too much in the end and they cruised to a lopsided victory. Kudos to the Iotas they never gave up and play hard the entire game. If this was a step competition i would put my money on the iotas however with a team that featured 1 player over 6ft tall not much was expected of them. The Kappas to advance to their yearly rivalry Game with the Desert Ques

Final score Iotas 22, Kappas 58

Kappas advance

Omegas vs GOMAB

Game2

The Desert Ques took on team GOMAB is a very physical game. A game the featured more trash talk then Michael Jordan & Floyd money Mayweather vs Chad Ocho Cinco & Magic Johnson with Charles Barkely and Kevin Hart doing the play by play. 2 teams that have faced each other before and knew what each other was capable of. Danny Lead GOMAB with 9pts with keymon(8pts) & John with 7pts. THe Ques were lead by their three headed Dawg team of Sloan "Show Biz" Baptiste (12pts), Ernie "I Get buckets" Burries (14pts) and Ed Campbell (15). In the end the Ques physical nature was just too much for the Sigmas. Even though they didnt score alot of pts the Ques Big man Ayo, Tim and KD controlled the boards and gave the Ques several 2nd and 3rd shot points. Ernie "I get bucket" Burries did just as his name suggests and talked smack to everyone on the court even teams not in the game. Ernie distrubuted the ball to his team well and drew several foul calls and probably more fouls then actually showed up in the score book. He helped to slow the game down and allowed the Ques to grind out the game by 11 points. Ed campbell and Sloan are the Ques spark plugs because both players came up big when their team needed a spark. Brandon Allen for the Sigmas battled hard in the paint but its clear he is not 100 percent from his ACL tear 18 months ago. Look for team GOMAB to improve next year with a nice nucleaus including Brandon Allen, Keymon and Danny. If they can get a few more pieces look for them them to make a deeper run next year. The Ques advance to Face arch nemisis the kappas.

Final score GOMAB 35 Omegas 46

Alphas Vs Gorillas

Game 3

In a hard fought game of brotherly love the Alphas faced their brothers in Alpha the Gorillas. When the 2 teams met earlier this season the Gorillas showed everyone in the gym why they were calling the alphas the alphas B team when they sonned(Slang for whoop em good like black parents do from time to time) team. The Gorillas baptized the Alphas. This game was a game of payback. The alphas team had evolved into some grown ass men poised to beat up the older brother after years of torment. THe alphas put on a show and sent the Gorillas back to the Zoo to get more training. lol The Alphas simply came out with more intensity thanks to Alphas Coach and Frat Games comissioner Eric Johnson. When interviewed after the game Coach Johnson said he knew his team was going to win because they were "better prepared" and he knew he had the upper hand on his LB and coach of the Gorillas team Henry Frierson Jr. This was a game to watch that featured a back and forth battle that in the end left the Gorillas at the gas station peddling for change because they ran out of gas. The Alphas stayed fresh using all their subs well and played as a team vs the Gorillas that preferred more of a 1 on 1 style offense. The alphas learned from their mistakes in Game 1 and played a pesky man 2 man (queue the peanut gallery the alphas would know somethin about man 2 man huh) defense against the Gorillas all game long and challenged every shot. The alphas were lead by Darnell Porter with 18 points and Eric Whipple with 10 points. Both were clutch Closing out both halves with some clutch shots. Even the Alphas Subs contributed Sheraud Moore had a nice and 1 late in the second half and crowd favorite Eric johnson chipped in a fundementally sound 4pts. The Alphas Starting five of Morris "Breeze" brown, Damien "turn it up" Ritter, Bryce "Big Boi" Copeland, Eric Whipple & Darnell "Hang Time" Porter can hang with any of the remaining teams in the league. I am going to step out on a limb here and state the ALphas will win it all barring any injuries or untimely absences. I have thus far predicted every game right this season with 1 exception. The Gorillas finished with Chuck Nixon (12pts) and Olumide (11pts)

Final score Alphas 56 Gorillas 48

Kappas vs Ques

Game 1

In a Battle of the Ques vs The Kappas. The Athletes (don’t believe me look at the NBA and NFL) vs Pretty Boys(highly debatable in my opinion #justsayin). Flashlight by parliament vs Atomic Dog by George Clinton #pause really hmmm. In a Battle where the Kappas had 6.5 men (no we are not clowning lil Ross Bennett but highlighting that John Hardy showed up at half time #blast) and the Ques had 10. Where were the Nupes Where were the nupes? Were was Anthony Sinclair, Jeff and Ike and the rest of the Pretty boys. This is not softball where the Nupes Pick up their team from the stands is it? Just is case Barzini did you bring you shoes. In a Game were at the start it was clear who the winner should be. One would think that the Junk yard Dawgs team who were much bigger their opponents would bully the Scrolling pretty boys. “NotSoFast” in my Lee Corse voice and this is why we play the game. The Game starting off with the Ques jumping out to a Early lead which they held for most of the game much to the chagrin to all the Nupes in the Gym Cough (Barzini, Jimmy Theragood AKA JT and a few others that shall remain nameless) The nupes were turning on their own team and coach and JT tried to tell coach Pawlos what he was doing wrong. We the Frat Games think coach Pawlos did an excellent job this season FYI. Coach Diff looked to have this match up over early and was looking forward to Sunday NFL football. The Dj had already “ROO”ed up Atomic Dog and told the Sigmas and Alphas to get ready. With 4 minutes left in the game the Ques led by 12 points. Then all of a sudden Monroe Alexander of the Kappas was reincarnated by Soldier Boy and got his Pretty boy Swag and brought his team back from the cusp of elimination by hitting a 2 threes and added couple of steals that led to easy buckets. In minutes the Nupes were back and the crowd was into the Game. The Fair weather Nupes had returned to their previous affiliations after virtually disowning the ones on the court #nohood lol With 15 seconds to go the game was tied. Then the Omegas Captain Ernie Burries who had been hurt all game showed people why he has earned the name I get buckets. Ernie drives to the whole (the paint, the middle, the rack for you basketball illiterate) and gets fouled with 2seconds left. He makes both free throws giving the Ques a 2 point lead. To make matter worse Monroe Fouls out of the game as that was his 5th and final foul. Yet again the DJ Queues up Atomic Dog. The ball is inbounded to Justin Wiggins whom basically is going to throw up a desperation shot at the buzzer at least so we thought but Ernie yes the same Ernie who just put the game on Ice fouls Justin in what The Frat Games Founder Anthony League stated was the most egregious foul committed in his almost 41 years of living(shout out to the Frat Games Champion Ship and his birthday party October 8th from 9PM-2 Am @ The Spot (1903 West Olympic Blvd Los Angeles, California) this #seeTheFratGamesPageForDetails #shamelessplug we know lol). The Foul sends Justin Wiggins the Pride of Dallas Texas to the line shooting 1 & 1. Justin does not revert to his Dallas roots in a revery #NoRomo moment and hits both Free throws to send us to the first of 3 overtimes. The Scrappy Kappas found a Way in the first 2 overtimes to come back on the Ques lead by Justin Wiggins. Finally in the third overtime the Ques were able to put the Kappas out of their misery and win game. In a post Game Interview with Frat Games Commissioner Eric Johnson he stated “Dam I didn’t think that game would ever end. We almost had to go to sudden death or a free throw shout out” The Kappas Only had 5 players left as 2 of their 7 players had previously fouled out and 2 other players had 4 fouls. The keys to the game were rebounding were the Ques killed the Kappas on the boards and perseverance were the Kappas repeatedly rallied from behind. Monroe “Money”Alexander led the Nupes with 20 points and Marquis Diamond had 16. Justin Wiggins chipped in a timely 9 points. For the Ques They were led once again by Ernie “I Get buckets” Burries with 21 and Sloan “Show biz” Baptiste with 16 points. Ed “Mr Do it all” Campbell had a quiet 12 points but he is the clear emotional leader of the Ques. Ed even though he didn’t hit his season average of 15 points has been the quiet assassin that is the perfect pairing with Ernie’s trash talking. In the Game of the year the Kappas and Ques took you on a rollercoaster and the Ques finally get revenge against the kappas and put them out of the playoffs. #ROO Please Note We apologize for not believing in the Ques and picking the Kappas to win. lol

Final score Ques 68, Kappas 63

The Desert Ques advance

Alphas vs True Blue Sigmas

Game 2

At the beginning of the season this matchup would have been seen as a virtual David Vs Goliath. The True Blue Sigmas are New York Yankees of the League because have owned the basketball court in LA, The Bay Area and Las Vegas and have been on an unprecedented (#pause puts on kanye voice … Sigmas you can have your moment but the Kappas had one of the greatest runs of all times … 5 time champs #history) Undefeated tear in the last 2 years and Kicking everyones ArSSe and taking names later. The Alphas were the Pittsburg Pirates and not because they are ….. a huh #blacknyellow (no we didn’t know what it is) Lets Face it the Alphas Team sucked at first (blown out by 30 pts) even old timers like Anthony league thought they couldn’t do any worse if he Played at almost 42 years of age (Yes his Bday party is this Saturday See this Frat Games Page for details #AnotherShamelessPlug). The Alphas started off as the little brothers of the Gorillas and were viewed as the Alpha B team. I don’t know what Eric “EJ” Johnson gave the gritty little apes but obviously his team drunk the koolaid(no it wasn’t grape or red). Alphas go From Scrubs to studs over night after they owned the Gorillas in a shocking defeat earlier in the playoffs. The Sigmas had been looking forward to finally being able to play the Gorillas in a much anticipated rematch (Dating back to the EBL days) after their last match up ended in a stallmate. But the Alphas beat the Gorillas and deprived True Blue coach Octavio Johnson of his dream match up. His team has practiced year around to Face the Gorillas but now instead face the Alphas who have not practiced to date. True Blue in Jay-Z fashion was not looking at you dudes, I'm looking past you.” That is until the Eric Johnson Frat Games Commissioner, The Alphas Coach, And marginal basketball player shocked the twitter and Facebook world by stating the Alphas would beat the Sigmas and had $1000 bet on the Alphas. Nobody took him up on the bet but True blue players called emergency practice to ensure they would silence and stick it to Mr Johnson yes mr Johnson to the Sigmas. Coach Eric Johnson Called coach Octavio Johnson from Connecticut pne day last week and stated he had the Cryptonite for the once superhuman Sigmas. He said He had a game plan to Beat the Sigmas. He stated he was going to make the Sigmas Role Players have to wake up and win a game for a change. Role Players like Tarik “Sleeping Giant” Hawkins. They Call him sleeping giant because he is a self proclaimed Giant on the court that nobody has seen on the court not even his own team hence the term sleeping. #shotfired lol Once again “THIS IS WHY WE PLAY THE GAME” The game itself can be summed up in2 words Fouls and shooting. The Alphas Got True Blue Stars (Wes Williams, Thomas Blunt) in Foul trouble early with 3 fouls each. The Sigmas almost disowned their own Frat brother Willis (head referee for the Frat games) after a few foul calls. Both Teams shot the bacl very well but the Alphas just didn’t miss. The Alphas had the perfect storm and their intense physical man 2 man defense and dam near perfect shooting percentage from the outside. The Alphas Hit 9 three points shot on 15 attempts. The Best battle of the Day was between Thomas Blunt (sigmas) and Darnell Porter (alphas). This was truly exciting to season as 2 6-5+ wings and former college hoop stars battle back and forth wreaking havoc on each other and opposing defenders. Both seemingly scored at will when the other was not guarding him. Each players were the answer to the other however the Sigmas didn’t have an answer for the X factor Mr. Eric Whipple from a Tennessee Chattanooga and Eta Phi Chapter. Eric also a former college hoopster had a game and season high 25 points. He made 6 threes and caught fire(#NBA JAMstyle) all game long and couldn’t miss. Eric Whipple was so hot that he even scorched the feet of Sigmas Coach Octavio Johnson and turned them White after witnessing the clutch performance. Or did tae just forget to put on lotion again? For the Alphas Darnell “DPO” Porter and Damien “Turn it up” Ritter both contributed 9 points. For the Sigmas Thomas Blunt has 13 points, Todd “Lazy Bone” Wilson and Jason 11 points. In the End the Fouls and the Hot Alpha shooting was too much for the SIgmas as the refs called the game with 24.7 seconds left to save the Sigmas from further embarrassment. Today in “This is why we play the game” Goliath was shot down by a flurry of stones from Eric Whipple and the Alphas Basketball sling shot. When asked about the Alphas shooting performance and metaphorical Slingshot fury Alphas Coach Eric Johnson Added Hey “protect yourself at all times” and #winning. He also added I am not even gonna rub in in their faces because the salt from LL Cool J’s “Deep blue Sea” is Jennifer Lopez “Enough”. This was further emphasized as Long time Frat Games Patron and Sigmaman Kyle Johnson Was Excommunicated from The Frat Games after he pulled the plug (literally) on the Alphas Victory Song Pistol Grip Pump. #hater LOL In His best little jon Voice “Yea.” The Sigmas undefeated reign of terror is over and ended by a team which nobody even thought had a chance at the start of the season.

Final score Alphas 55, True Blue Sigmas 44

#ROO Please Note We apologize for not believing in the Ques and picking the Kappas to win. lol
